The SEKA Scholarship for Environmental Studies is funded by family and friends of Spiros Koulouris, MD, who died March 29, 2021. It is for students at OCCC who demonstrate a passion for learning and have career goals that involve protecting the environment.
Dr. Koulouris studied Medicine at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Aerospace Medicine in Paris, France, and Neurological Surgery at George Washington University, D.C. But his most stimulating courses were those he took at OCCC after retiring from Neurosurgery…. courses in Geology, Astronomy, Physics, Marine Biology, and Mathematics.
Born and raised on the historic Ionian Island of Corfu, Greece, Dr. Koulouris was an independent thinker fascinated with the Cosmos and planet Earth. Spiros had a huge heart, especially for the underdog, for he knew that experience well growing up poor during the Second World War in occupied Corfu.

Thirty-eight years ago, Spiros gave his soulmate a book of poems by C.P. Cavafy. He inscribed the front cover with a quote from the poem “Ithaka” where Cavafy speaks of odyssey, homecoming, and gratitude.
